Description
An A.L.S. of Thomas J. Gregg , Co. F of the 6th Penn. Cavalry, ‘Rush’s Lancers’, 2pp. narrow 12mo., ‘Head Qrs 2nd CC near Malvern’s Hill’, Aug. 19, 1864, in pencil to his brother. In part: ‘…We have passed through much since we crossed the river six days ago. Had my hand shot in the same fight. Dave and myself are safe, as yet Col. Gregg, Col. Wilson and quite a number of officers were wounded. Many officers on the staff had their horses shot besides Capt. Weir’s which had to be abandoned. Col. Gregg was shot through the wrist…Grant is too much for Lee…I think we have done our duty. I have just finished Genl. Sherman’s letter to the men…it is splendid and he speaks the sentiment of every soldier in the army…’. Signed ‘Tom A. A. G.’. Very good.
