Item Details

Description

One of the most elusive and probably the smallest, of all 19th century needlework pieces are Watch Samplers, small, round stitched items, usually made by a wife or daughter to be kept inside the case of a gentleman’s pocket watch. They are usually between 1 ¾” and 2 ¼” in diameter and sometimes have decorations, sometimes initials and on rare occasions, a full name or motto, or a date. As you can well imagine, very few have survived. This example is stitched on silk, and includes a multi-colored crown and a wreath of colorful flowers. It measures 1 ½” x 1 7/8” (the longer dimension includes the edge tab, which was probably to make it easier to insert/remove the piece from the watch case). Incredibly precise stitches and no condition issues except for several faint streaks of brown color to the right of the crown! Otherwise, It is clean and complete: one of the nicest examples I have seen. This sampler is UNFRAMED, but if you have or can get a small period frame, it would look great.
