Mannumi Shaqu (disc # E7-824, Cape Dorset / Kinngait, Inuit, 1917-2000). Bust. Soapstone sculpture, n.d. Signed in English with disc number on underside of base. A charming soapstone sculpture by Inuit artist Mannumi Shaqu depicting the bust of an Inuit bundled up in a hooded coat with a thick, fur collar surrounding the head like a lion's mane. Crowned by a long fringe that covers the forehead, the figure presents slender eyes beneath arched brows, a round nose, and a gentle, closed-lipped smile flanked by full cheeks. Size: 6.4" W x 9.3" H (16.3 cm x 23.6 cm)

A prominent early modern Inuit sculptor and carver, Mannumi Shaqu was born near Cape Dorset (Baffin Island), Nunavut, Canada and lived in Nunavut his whole life. His carvings have been included in a number of landmark exhibitions and his works are in several Canadian museum collections. His sculpture "Mother and Child" was given to Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth on the occasion of her November 1951 visit to Canada. It was one of the first times a work of Inuit art was presented as an official gift by Canada.

Signed in English with disc number on underside of base. Some minor chips and small nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age, but otherwise intact and excellent. Nice preservation of detail.
