Central Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern India, Gandhara, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A collection of 5 pottery molds to impress decorative features into clay vessels, votive tablets, beads, or statues before firing. The region of Gandhara played a significant role in the Silk Road trade network; these terracotta molds sped up production to meet demands. Included are modern putty impressions of each mold. Size of largest: 5" L x 4.5" W (12.7 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Spink and Son, London, UK, 1999

Chips and loss to the peripheries of the largest mold and softening to details. Rest are intact and very good condition. Light mineral and earthen deposits. Modern putty impressions included.
