Description
Dancing Sea Nymphs

Watercolor, and gouache on paper. Matted and framed (no glass). Bears auction stickers and notations on the reverse. Signed and dated lower left with the artist’s monogram and dated “1938”. A quote from Walter De La Mare is inscribed on the matte. Depicting three young dancing women wearing gauze as they float over an ocean seascape with the sun rising. A fine and rare example of Estella Canziani’s work in the Arts and Crafts - Pre Raphaelite style.

Painting (sight through mat): 13” x 19” (33 cm x 49 cm)

Frame: 21.5” x 27” (55 cm x 69 cm)

PROVENANCE: Bonham's 2004; San Francisco collection

CONDITION: Painting in good condition, no apparent restoration. Frame with light wear. No glass in place over painting.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Estella Canziani (1887-1964). British painter, interior decorator and writer. She trained as an artist, studying first at the 'Copernicus', a Kensington school run by Sir Arthur Cope and Erskine Nicol, then at the Royal Academy alongside members and followers of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Arts & Crafts movement. She exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, Liverpool, Milan, Venice and France. Her most famous work was a watercolor entitled ‘The Piper of Dreams’, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1915. Reproductions of the work are said to rivaled Holman Hunt's ‘The Light of the World’ in popularity.

Canziani travelled extensively throughout Europe. A large part of her collection is preserved in the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Member of: the Royal Society of British Artists; the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society; Society of Painters in Tempera; Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; and the Folklore Society.
