Beautifully painted rendition of African American lovers at a celebration, probably the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.The work is painted in a very stylized, modernist manner.
Dan Atkinson is a known artist but not much biographical information regarding his life and work is available. He may have been a Black artist, as all the paintings we have seen by him depict Black subjects in a strong and sensitive way. Please see the last photo for a group of black and white images of other paintings by him. These images were found in a collection of photographs owned by George Whitney and then by Marilyn Blaisdell, both were West Coast collectors.

CONDITION: Excellent condition. No damage or restoration noted. Original frame in good condition.
