Description
A classic modern color lithograph on Arches wove paper titled "The Tribe of Zebulon (from Twelve Maquettes of Stained Glass Windows for Jerusalem)" by Marc Chagall. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of XIX/LXXV (19/75) on the bottom left. Published in 1964 by Mourlot, Paris (Mourlot CS 16). Printed by Charles Sorlier, who was Chagall's creative collaborator and master printmaker, assisting him in the Mourlot atelier. A dreamlike yet romantic image embedded with symbolism. There is a sense of peacefulness that is imbedded with artistic inspiration. From a private collection. Dimensions: 34.75"h x 27.25"w x 1"d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was an early modernist famed for iconic romantic and surreal imagery. He created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries, and fine art prints. In the early 1920s he met Ambroise Vollard, which led to his first solo exhibition in Paris. During his lifetime he had a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1946. He also was commissioned a variety of public installations including the stain glass windows at the synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center, Jerusalem (installed in 1962); a ceiling for the Paris Opera (installed in 1964); a window for the United Nations building, New York (installed in 1964); murals for the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (installed in 1967); and windows for the cathedral in Metz, France (installed in 1968). An exhibition of the artist's work from 1967 to 1977 was held at the Musee du Louvre, Paris, in 1977-78, and a major retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1985. Today, Chagall is known as one of the greatest artists of the Modern period and his art is in countless museums across the United States.
