Description
China, Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Ink and watercolor on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll, on a silk brocade coated paper frame. Depicting the vanquisher of demons Zhong Kui, grim-faced and dressed in his characteristic red robe.
Inscriptions: Upper left inscribed, dated to the year of Jia Ying, signed Zhousan. One seal 'made by Zhousan'. The reverse, 'Zhousan' and 'Zhong Kui'.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, browning, few stains, and minor creasing.
Provenance: Austrian private collection. A copy of an invoice from Ostasiatika, Renata Horstmann De Pepe GmbH, dated 11 October 1990, and stating the purchase price of DM 8,200, accompanies this lot. A copy of an expertise by Ostasiatika, Renata Horstmann De Pepe GmbH, dated 3 September 1990, and dating the scroll to the 19th century, accompanies this lot.
