Description
AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA (ITALIAN, 1529-1608): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED BAGPIPER
probably 19th century, but crisply cast and with a rich brown patination, raised on a rouge griotte marble cylindrical plinth over a square base,
the bronze 11cm high, 19.5cm high overall
It is difficult to firmly date this high quality cast, as it may have been mounted on the 19th century marble base at a later stage. A number of high quality casts of the Bagpiper cast by Antonio and his nephew Gianfrancesco still survive, the prime version being that now in the Bargello, Florence. Another case attributed to Susini was sold at Christie's, London, 2 December 2014, lot 19.
