This is a pretty, German porcelain Dresden Lace figurine. It depicts a man and a lady playing chess. It is quite unusual figurine. It has lace around the lady's neck and layers of pink and white lace on her dress. This figurine is approx. 5 3/4" tall and 6 1/2" by 4 3/4" at the base. The figurine is properly marked on the bottom You will love this sweet vintage figurine. It is in good condition. There are a few small chips to the lace (please see the pictures) The figurine is nice pale colors in excellent shape with the paint and details still brilliant. Great gift for the holidays or a surprise for a collector They are a truly beautiful piece that will be a great addition to any collection Dresden figurines draw their inspiration from the ones made a couple of dozen kilometers down the Elbe River in Meissen. The link between Dresden and Meissen is so close, that for years the word, Dresden, was used to describe porcelain pieces that had actually been produced in Meissen. One of the most famous techniques of Dresden artists was something called Dresden lace. To create the illusion of real fabric on figurines of women dancing at royal balls, decorators would dip actual, delicate lace into porcelain slip before applying it by hand to the porcelain figure. When fired in a kiln, the fabric would burn away, leaving a hard but extremely fragile shell of frozen crinoline skirts and billowy material behind.
