Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. An ethereal cast brass standing Buddha statue and gilt in lustrous gold, upon a tiered pedestal with his hands held up and open in the Abhaya Mudra gesture. This is a classic Bangkok Style (Rattanakosin) rendering, with a tranquil visage, flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robe with glass mirror shard inlays, elaborately decorated pedestal, and of course the brilliant gilding! The Abhaya Mudra is also known as "Gesture of Fearlessness," dispelling fear and promoting peace and tranquility. The verso has a small ring that may have tethered this special statue to a niche / altar of a public shrine or temple. Size: 3" L x 2.75" Diameter x 12" H (7.6 cm x 7 cm x 30.5 cm)'; gold quality: 4%
Provenance: ex-private Pasadena, California, USA collection from old San Francisco collection accumulated between 1970 and 2000
