Partially Printed Document Signed, "Howell Cobb", 1p, on bifold blind-embossed Treasury Department "Official" stationery measuring 7.75" x 9.5", Windsor, Vermont, March 11, 1857. Docketed at verso. Expected folds and creases. Light age toning and soiling. Minor smudging at the "bb" of "Cobb". In fine condition.
Just days after his appointment as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Cobb acknowledges the acceptance of Daniel Chipman Linsley (1827-1889) as Superintendent of Construction. Linsley was an engineer, businessman, author, and political figure from Vermont, most notable for his railroad work
Howell Cobb (1815-1868) was a Confederate political figure, best known as one of the founders of the Confederacy, having served as the President of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States, where delegates of the Southern slave states declared that they had seceded from the United States and created the Confederate States of America. A southern Democrat, he was a five-term member of the United States House of Representatives and the speaker of the House from 1849 to 1851. Cobb also served as the 40th governor of Georgia from 1851 to 1853 and as the 22nd secretary of the treasury under President James Buchanan from 1857 to 1860.Â
