Description

Law Enforcement in the Old West- Pair of (2) Photos ft. Sheriffs, Native, & African Americans!

A pair of two, oversized cabinet photographs each depicting scenes of the Old West, specifically involving sheriffs and persons of color. Each image measures approximately 9.75" x 7.5", and is mounted to stiff board to the overall size of 12" x 10", n.p., undated. The first shows two men, likely members of law enforcement, accosting an indigenous man and woman while one flashes a gun at them. The second depicts a scene outside of a sheriff station in which several men have been chained and lassoed together, including two African Americans standing in the back of the group. Exhibits varying degrees of surface creasing and minor imperfections, with moderate wear to outside boards, including bumped corners and tearing. Good to fair condition overall- a unique pairing.

Criminals in the American frontier were delt with notoriously harsh punishment. Aside from the occasional Western sheriff and Marshal, there were other various law enforcement agencies throughout the region, such as the Texas Rangers. These lawmen were not just instrumental in keeping the peace, but also in protecting the locals from what they viewed as Native and Mexican threats at the border. Law enforcement tended to be more stringent in towns than in rural areas, putting emphasis on maintaining stability more than armed combat. This often meant focusing on drunkenness, disarming cowboys who violated gun-control edicts, and dealing with flagrant breaches of gambling and prostitution ordinances.
