Description
Mrs. Charles Lindbergh ALS "Give my love to its pearly beach..."
Postcard, measuring 3.5" x 5.5", Darien, Connecticut, dated February 18, 1953. A short letter from Anne to John Oldrin, signed "Anne M.L.", expressing her regrets that she cannot make it to the beach for the upcoming season. Written on a "Mainzer Cat" postcard, it reads:
“Thank you so much for your note & your kindness in offering to take something down to Captiva for Charles or me. Alas, I am afraid neither of us can get to Captiva this year. Isn’t it sad. I shall miss it so. Give my love to its pearly beach, dove-colored & soft. And to you, good fishing & good shelling & - most of all – good writing!” The postcard is accompanied by the original envelope, postmarked February 18 from Darien, CT. Light corner bumping and boldly signed. Expected wear and soiling to the envelope.
Both the Lindberghs and Oldrins vacationed on Captiva Island, off Fort Myers, Florida. From the 1940s through the 1960s, the Alfred Mainzer Company of Long Island City, NY published a series of humorous postcards illustrated by Eugen Hartung, which became known as “Mainzer Cats”. These postcards frequently illustrated dressed cats involved in a sequence of events just before a minor disaster was set to occur.
