Berenice Abbott (July 17, 1898 – December 9, 1991) was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photography of New York City in the 1930s. She was born in Springfield, Ohio, and initially studied journalism at Ohio State University. Abbott later moved to New York City in 1918 and worked as a journalist and darkroom assistant.Her interest in photography grew, and she moved to Paris in 1921, where she became an assistant to the influential modernist photographer Man Ray. While in Paris, Abbott was exposed to the work of European avant-garde artists and photographers, influencing her own artistic style.In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Abbott returned to the United States and began her most well-known project, "Changing New York." This ambitious documentary project aimed to capture the transformation of the city during a period of rapid urbanization. The project resulted in a significant body of work that provides a historical record of New York City during that time.Berenice Abbott's photography is characterized by its clarity, precision, and focus on architectural subjects. She contributed significantly to the development of documentary photography and played a key role in preserving the visual history of New York City. Abbott's work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries, and her legacy as a pioneering photographer continues to be recognized and celebrated.
