Description
This bronze statuette, standing 5.5 cm tall and 2 cm wide (2.17 inches by 0.79 inches), represents a deity seated on a seven-headed snake, known as Naga. Dating from the 15th to 17th century, the figure is a classic example of Southeast Asian iconography, where the Naga is often depicted as a protector of the Buddha. This particular pose is known as the 'Naga Prok' attitude, which symbolizes the Buddha being sheltered by the Naga during a great flood. The Naga's multiple heads form a protective canopy over the Buddha, which is a common motif in the art of countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, reflecting the integration of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. This artifact would have been used for spiritual purposes, likely serving as a focal point in personal or temple worship, invoking the protective and regenerative power of the Naga combined with the spiritual purity of the Buddha.
