Description
Two (2) Elizabeth Galbraith McIntyre Jewell (Washington/Massachusetts, 1874-1956) oil on board paintings. 1st item: Painting depicting New England farmhouse on a sunny day, rendered in shades of purple, green, pink, and blue. Signed E. G. Jewell, lower right. With estate stamp en verso. Housed in a speckled giltwood frame with nameplate. Sight: 15 1/4" W x 17" H. Frame: 18 9/16" W x 21 3/8" H. 2nd item: Maritime painting of a ship moored at harbor lowering its mainsail, rendered with light impasto. Unsigned. Estate stamp inscribed "Estate of Elizabeth Jewell" en verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with gadrooning and a linen filet. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed: 18 1/2" H x 20 1/4" W. Biography: "Elizabeth Galbraith Jewell was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She became an impressionist landscape painter who began seriously pursuing her art interests after her children had grown. She studied at Boston University in 1898 under Phillip L. Hale, Susan Ricker Knox, Laura Coombs Hill, and George L. Noyes, between 1916-1923. Additionally she studied under Charles Woodbury at the Ogunquit School, and Frank Leslie. Her work was exhibited at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA, the Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, ME, and was part of the exhibition titled "Charles H. Woodbury & His Students" at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in 1998. She was a member of the Merrimack Valley Art Association. Jewell painted in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Ogunquit and Monhegan, Maine." Source: Peter Falk, "Who Was Who in American Art".
Condition
1st item: Abrasion to corners, with minor area of retouching to upper right corner, 2 1/2" L. 2nd item: Overall good condition with light craquelure due to heavy layering of paint. Frame with light overall general wear and one stain in the lower-left corner.
