Description
Two (2) Federal Mahogany Side Chairs including a Shield Back chair with Prince of Wales feather carving of Hepplewhite design attributed to Newport, Rhode Island, having curved legs and brass upholstery tacks, and one Racket Back chair with straight tapering legs, attributed to Philadelphia. Both with serpentine front rails and matching yellow and blue striped silk upholstery. Circa 1790. A 1999 photograph of shield back chair prior to its reupholstery, supplied by the past owner's estate, is included with our catalog photographs. A similar example, attributed to John Townsend of Newport, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Bayou Bend Collection (object B.66.11.2). Shield back chair: 38 1/4" H x 21 3/4" W x 20 1/2" D, Seat Height: 18" H. Racket back chair: 35 1/2" H x 21 1/4" W x 20 1/2" D, Seat Height: 17 3/4" H.

Condition
The chair with Prince of Wales feather carving is stable but has extensive restorations including repairs to seat back frame, crest, splat, and at least one leg. Square (racket) back chair is stable with repair at one leg where it joins the seat frame. Some light wear/staining to upholstery on both chairs.
