Luminous 19th century KPM porcelain plaque after Gerrit Dou depicting "An Old Schoolmaster Cutting His Pen" in an ornate gold frame, plaque measures 9.5in W x 12in H ( 24 cm W 31cm H) with frame 17in W by 19.5 in H (43 cm W x 50 cm H) The reverse side is impressed with the scepter mark above āKPMā
The original painting by Dou was completed in 1671. Gerrit Dou (7 April 1613 ā 9 February 1675), also known as Gerard Douw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. He specialized in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'Åil "niche" paintings and candlelit night scenes with strong chiaroscuro. He was a student of Rembrandt.
