Item Details
Description
  • Described By:Sam HFA NRG
  • Title:Wood and Hughes Marcy Indianapolis Gall Family Gilded Sterling Silver Clam Pastry Server 1871-1899
  • Description: Gorgeous, large, barely-used clamshell gilt and sterling silver pastry server belonging to the Gall family of Indiana in the late 19th century. Made by Wood & Hughes in New York, who were in operation from 1845-1899, and who adopted the “WwH” hallmark present on the reverse of the utensil in 1871, thus dating this piece to sometimes between then and their cessation of operation in 1899. On the obverse there are floral engravings on the neck and handle, and a large, delicate floral display on the bowl. The gilt is present only on the bowl and beginning of neck, where it seamlessly transitions to traditional sterling silver color for the remainder of the neck and handle. Monogrammed “Gall” on reverse of handle. The Gall family built a retail empire in 19th century Indiana/Indianapolis, and at the close of the century were the wealthiest family in the state; enjoying the heights of luxury, such as this beautiful piece currently up for auction.
  • Approx. Dimensions or Size:10.75 inches long, 2.5 inches wide at the bowl, and 1 inch wide at the handle.
  • Condition:Very good. Lightly, if ever used, the only condition of note is there seems to be a bare area on the handle where some of the most delicate engraving may have rubbed off, but overall this piece is in exceptional condition.
  • Hallmarks:WwH STERLING Patent MARCY Gall
  • Estimated weight of piece:3.205 ozt.
  • Estimated size of package:12 x 10 x 3
