7. A Highly Important Portrait of Emperor (r.1605-1627) India, 17th century. Ink, gouache and gold on laminated paper. Provenance : Christie?s London, 10th October 2014 , lot 24. Album page composed of two paintings, one representing a prince at Zenana, the other a pen drawing depicting two women supporting a third overcome by drunkenness.On the reverse, calligraphy panel, in black, white and yellow nasta'liq writing. The central rectangle and the inscriptions surrounding it in white repeat the same poem in praise of Imam Ali, while the four cartouches on the sides form a quatrain in Persian. Bears a signature at the bottom "Adat (?)"Painting depicting Jahangir: 11.8 x 7.8 cmPage at sight: 23.4 x 17.7 cmThe emperor Jahangir in the Zenana, Mughal India, 17th centuryInk, opaque pigments and gold on paper, on floral album leaf, backed on cream card. On the reverse, invocations for imam 'Ali in nasta'liq.The portrait that has come down to us represents Emperor Jahangir, recognizable by his fine mustache and his Altaic features. He is seated under a gold brocade canopy, wearing a crescent turban and a very fine white ?jama?. In front of him, the women of the harem, called "zenana" in India, adorned with pearls and jewels, present him with refined dishes on golden dishes. Behind the emperor, we can clearly see blue-white porcelain tableware, probably imported from China, arranged in architectural niches. In the foreground, the hat-wearing duenna is responsible for the good order of the emperor's harem. Jahangir had many wives including Nur Jahan on May 25, 1611, and many more concubines. 44 cm x 26 cm.
