Very scarce 1847 New Universal Atlas published by S. Augustus Mitchell, complete with all maps and in sound, clean condition. Contains 72 lithographed maps as called-for, all with original, full hand-color in Mitchell’s recognizable color scheme for the time period. Original publisher's half red roan, marbled boards, lettered in gilt. First published by Mitchell in 1846 after having acquired the rights to Henry Schenk Tanner's New Universal Atlas from Carey & Hart who had published editions in 1843 and 1844. Mitchell changed many of the maps, changed the maps from copperplates to lithography, and issued the atlas at least once a year until 1850, when he sold the rights to Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company. Many maps in this atlas bear the imprint of S. Augustus Mitchell, and the copyright notice of either H. N. Burroughs, or H. S. Tanner. All maps sound with no tears and light edge toning, almost universally common for Mitchell atlases of this era. Front hinge cracked but binding strings holding solid. Tips showing; cover paper worn through at some points on edges. A nice-appearing book, especially for its age. Total retail for individual maps in this atlas is well over $10,000. 14.5 x 17.25
