Description
This charming piece is an ancient Egyptian terracotta hedgehog figurine, crafted from blue faience. It measures 9.5 cm in length, 5 cm in height, and 5 cm in width, equating to roughly 3.74 x 1.97 x 1.97 inches. The hedgehog, an animal known for its protective spines, was a symbol of rebirth in Egyptian mythology due to its hibernation behavior, emerging in the spring as if reborn. Faience, a glazed ceramic material, was popular in ancient Egypt for its bright colors and glossy finish, which symbolized life and was associated with the sun and the divine. This particular artifact dates back to Egypt's Late Period, a time when faience production reached a high level of technical and artistic quality. The hedgehog's blue color is significant, as blue was often used to represent the Nile, the source of life for Egypt, as well as the heavens.
