A rectangular trinket box with hinged lid depicting of a horse carriage, Palekh style, signed The Tale of the Golden Cockerel, red interior. Khokhloma, named after a village in Volga region, is a Russian wood painting handicraft style. The Khokhloma ornament is known for its curved and vivid flower, berry, and leaf patterns. The Tale of the Golden Cockerel is a fairy tale in verse by Alexander Pushkin. Palekh is one of the largest centers of Russian lacquer art.
