Description
A pair of vintage Russian lacquered wooden trinket boxes of triangular shape with hinged lids. Each item is black with hand-painted decor on the lid, the inside is painted red. The first box depicts a man with a bird, titled Zhar-Ptitsa underneath. The second depicts a young woman with a vanity box, titled Malachite Box underneath. Presumably Palekh school. Zhar-ptitsa or Firebird is a magical creature from Slavic mythology, the captor of the bird is said to get his wishes fulfilled. The Malachite Casket is a folk tale of the Ural region.
