Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 CE. A fine pottery stamp incised with a stylized monkey. The playful primate is formed from several parallel and spiraling striations with a long tail and one paw raised. Monkeys were highly symbolic to the ancients of the Americas. Scholars believe that the indigenous were fascinated by the physical antics of these animals, viewing them as parodies of human behavior. Size: 2.8" L x 2.6" W x 1.4" H (7.1 cm x 6.6 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection; ex-Frank Boos collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, around 1979
