"James A. Garfield" Collection of Fifteen Mourning and 1882 "Garfield Monument Fair" Souvenir Silk Ribbons
James A. Garfield Printed Silk Ribbons Collection of (15), including a Mourning Ribbon, a "Garfield Guards Committee" Ribbon and (13) Colorful Silk Ribbons for Different State Visitors to the Garfield Monument Fair, held in November in Washington, D.C. to Raise Funds for a Monument to the Slain President, grading Choice Extremely Fine to Near Mint.
This impressive and diverse Collection of 15 Silk Ribbons pertain to President James A. Garfield. They include a black on white Mourning Ribbon reading: "In Memoriam Garfield Sept. 19th, 1881"; plus a gold on blue "Garfield Guards Committee" Ribbon, and of special interest, 13 Different very scarce Silk Ribbons for the "Garfield Monument Fair," which was held in Washington D.C. for 5-days beginning Nov. 25, 1882, to raise funds for Monument to President Garfield.
The Garfield Monument Fair was held at the Capitol's Rotunda and National Statuary Hall, where artwork and other items were sold. The money raised by this Fair, along with funds raised in other events, along with contributions allocated by Congress, were used to pay for the monument & statue by sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, which was unveiled in Washington, D.C. on May 12, 1887.
These Silk Ribbons are for different State delegations or visitors to the Fair, and have illustrations of the State Seal. They include Silk Ribbons for Delegations from Iowa (2, one with gold braid at bottom), Indiana, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, District of Columbia, "Indiana Ladies' Association. Nov. 25, 1882", New York, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky and Connecticut. A variety of colors and sizes, 3 with Gold Braid at the bottom. A rare opportunity to acquire such a large diverse collection intact.
