Description

1961 Porsche 356B T5 Super 90 Roadster Coachwork by Drauz Chassis no. 88972 Engine no. 801979 • German delivery from new • Desirable 'Super 90' Roadster • Matching numbers engine • Stunning in 'slate grey' • Ready to use and enjoy * Please note that this car will be available for viewing by prior appointment in Belgium. Introduced in 1948, the Porsche 356 set a new standard for small sports cars and proved adaptable to all forms of motor sport including circuit racing and rallying. Cabriolets had been manufactured right from the start of 356 production, but the first open Porsche to make a significant impact was the Speedster, introduced in 1954 following the successful reception in the USA of a batch of 15 special roadsters. The Reutter-bodied Speedster was dropped in 1958 and replaced by the more civilised Convertible D, which differed principally by virtue of its larger windscreen and winding side windows. Porsche sub-contracted cabriolet body construction to a number of different coachbuilders, predominantly Glaser and Reutter in the early years, while production of the Convertible D (now renamed 'Roadster') was undertaken by Drauz of Heilbronn and later d'Ieteren of Brussels. By the time the 356B arrived in September 1959, the car had gained a one-piece rounded windscreen and 15'-diameter wheels, and the newcomer's introduction brought with it further styling revisions. The engine, now standardised at 1,600cc, was available in three different stages of tune, the most powerful - apart from the four-cam Carrera - being the 90bhp unit of the Super 90. This powerful Super 90 Roadster was coach-built by Drauz, who it seems (According to Dr. B. Johnson's reference book) built only 89 B T5 Roadsters for model year 1961. It was originally 'Rubinrot' with a black leatherette interior. Although ordered new through Baden Auto in Freiburg, Germany, and delivered there in January 1961, we believe the car probably left for the USA in September 1961, by which time it had covered 10,168 kms. The first owner on the Kardex is Dr. Andrew Wiedmer of New York, USA. While much of the car's earlier history is a little uncertain, we know that the car returned to Europe a while ago and underwent a thorough restoration, which seems to have endured very well. The car was resprayed in the desirable 'Slate Grey'/Schieffergrau finish you see today, and the overhauled interior retained its original black hue. Post-restoration, the car's Belgian owner entered the car for various summer rallies and events. We can confirm that the car starts, runs and drives as impressively as it looks – and it looks very fine indeed. During our 30 kilometres run out in this very rare 356 Roadster, the engine, brakes, clutch, gearbox, suspension and steering behaved and performed without fault or complaint. The car comes with its Belgian registration documents and a copy of the Porsche Kardex.
