George Cukor directed this suspenseful yarn wherein Ingrid Bergman is made to believe she's going crazy by her husband, played by Charles Boyer. The current term of 'gaslighting' was taken from this original story and pertains to the husband's scheme of changing the lighting in the gas lamps to confuse his wife. Bergman won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance. She wears the gown in the bedroom scene where Boyer mentally tortures her by saying her mother was mad and had been in an asylum.
