Item Details
Description
Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to early Late Period, dynasties 21 through 26, ca. 1070 to 525 BCE. Rare and quite fascinating faience amulet of Ptaikos/ Pataikos, the bow-legged dwarf deity meant as a protector and a mitigator of violent natural forces, mold-made from faience and covered in a lustrous deep-green glaze. He stands atop an integral plinth, holds attenuated arms to his portly abdomen, and has a petite suspension loop behind his neck as a portion of olynth running up reverse. Prominent ears flank his enlarged head, which is crowned by a bulbous headdress topped with a scarab beetle. What makes this example so unusual is the molded band of glyphs running up the reverse along with molded Eye of Horus on the base. The glyphs on the reverse plynth include another Eye of Horus, beetle, ateph feather and ankh. Size: .875" W x 2.325" H (2.2 cm x 5.9 cm)
