Inde du Sud, période Vijaynagar, vers XVe siècle
A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF DURGA
South India, Vijaynagar Period, ca. 15th century
Present in the hieratic pose clad in a long pleated dhoti secured with elaborate belts, she is adorned with necklaces, earrings, baju-bands, bracelets and a breast-band, her face with almond-shaped eyes and hair arranged in a conical headdress, Standing on a circular lotus base.
46.9cm (18 1/2in) high.

Durga as the destroyer of demons is frequently invoked as a protector, yet in Tamil Nadu she is also perceived as the sister of Vishnu. She presents the attributes of the sankha and chakra in upper hands, her lower right palm displaying the gesture of charity (varada mudra).
