Item Details
Description
Oil on canvas. Provenance: - Former collection of the Dukes of Uceda (with old handwritten inscription on the back of the canvas). Bibliography: - Testamentary of the Duke of Uceda 4/VIII/1874 APM, 31205, fols. 4233-4241. Although originally from the Netherlands, Jacob Van Loo was the initiator of an important saga of artists who developed their production in the city of Paris. He cultivated history, genre and mythological painting, standing out mainly as a painter of portraits, both collective and individual. A good example of his mastery is this portrait that shows an elegant lady in a blue dress holding a rose in her hands. Due to its physiognomic features, it appears to be a portrait of Lucretia Boudaen (1616-1663), an important lady who married Jean Ortt and, after becoming a widow, Christoffel Van Gangelt. Two other portraits of this woman are preserved by Jacob Van Loo; one of them with an older age and another wearing the mourning of widowhood. In all three she shows the same type of hairstyle and identical jewelry. The work comes from the important collection of the Dukes of Uceda in which in the past there were works by great masters of Spanish painting (Murillo, El Greco, Carreño, Zurbaran), Italian (Sassoferrato, Salvator Rosa, Guido Reni) and Flemish (Snyders, Teniers, Berchem). Specifically, this portrait is registered in entry number sixty of said collection as: "A lady, half-length, blue dress by Vanderat" and valued at the high sum of one thousand two hundred pesetas. We imagine that the name "Vanderat" in the inventory refers to the painter Jan Van Der Vaart (c. 1650-1727), a painter also specialized in the portrait genre. Measurements: 117 x 88 cm.
