Description: Engraved map/chart. Printed on six sheets, joined together and mounted on linen backing, sectioned for folding. Overall 130x245 cm (51¼x96½“), folding to 13x11“.Very large, quite rare chart of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the surrounding land masses. The map extends from the eastern United States to west Africa and from a little south of South America to Baffin Bay or mid-Alaska. The tracks of many Spanish navigators are shown, and many islands of the Pacific Ocean are marked with the date of discovery. Tooley, The Mapping of Australia and Antarctic, 555, Plate 38 [reproducing the Australia sheet]. This is the Warren Heckrotte copy, and he remarks in his notes, “Tooley states that each sheet in lower margin is marked constructed for Dn. Jose de Espinosa London 1812 No. 17 Dean Street Soho. This was trimmed off my copy when mounted on linen... Tooley states that Espinosa left Spain for London after a French appointed ruler was seated in Spain. In London, he also issued a map of the West Indies and a map of the south Atlantic Ocean...“ The present map is a corrected re-issue of the 1813 edition, and there was also an 1814 issue. In 1825 the Mexican government printed a copy of the map. All issues are rare. OCLC lists only one copy of the 1813 issue, other than internet resources, at the New York Public Library.
