Snyder to his brother, John, who had followed him to California in the early Gold Rush, telling of his plans to move to San Francisco for the winter and advising him to either mine or find a place with the Major to spend the winter. This letter was written just two weeks after California became a state; Fred would go on to be a member of the California State Assembly and found two newspapers, The Mountain Democrat and The Miner‘s Advocate.
