A LARGE BURMESE SILVER BETEL NUT MARRIAGE BOX, MID-20TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY SHAN STATES, CIRCA 1940-50
of circular form raised on a pointed square base, the body with embossed decoration of figural Jataka scenes with trees and buildings to the background, Burmese script above each one, each panel divided by V-shaped cartouches containing two Gandharva amidst foliate scrolls, the feet cornered with peacocks forming arches inhabited by foliate scrolls, the shoulder with twelve embossed vignettes containing zodiac symbols, the pull-off domed lid with embossed figural panels depicting domestic life, Gandharva and horseback riders, surmounted by an elephant finial signed in Burmese on the underside. 28cm high, 39.4 troy ounces
