Description
Ca. AD 100-200.A lovely pair of gold earrings, each formed of a tapering hoop, which culminates in a hook and eye closure for ease of wear. The hoops are attached to shields that are embellished with ropework borders, creating a sense of depth and texture. At the center of each shield is a single granule, which serves to accentuate the intricate decoration and draw the eye towards the center of the design. Another granule is positioned at the lower edge of the shield, adding a further point of visual interest. Beneath the hoop, clusters of filigree add a delicate and intricate touch, further enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the earrings. The filigree is finely crafted, with each element carefully placed to create a harmonious and balanced design. In the Roman world, gold earrings were worn by both men and women and were considered essential components of the Roman dress code. They were often given as gifts to mark special occasions, and were cherished as symbols of affection and esteem. Roman gold earrings were characterized by their intricate designs and exceptional workmanship, reflecting the Roman love of luxury and extravagance. Size: 22mm x 14.4mm; Weight: 3.2g Provenance: Private London collection; British art market 1990s.
