Chinese foo dogs (actually lions, shi), are always in pairs and help promote success and prosperity by warding off negative energies and evil influences, either for people or their buildings. Carved wood, early 20th century. H 10.3 cm(4 in.) x2, Provenance: Property of Bruce Elliot Tapper Ph.D., a social anthropologist, journalist, writer, and editor. He was an editor at the Smithsonian Associates Program in the early 1980s and then had a career as an editor at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
