This large-paper set rarely comes on the market—most available editions are the smaller 8.5” size. Complete limited edition 12-vol. set of Macaulay's Works in solid condition. Volumes I to VI – “The History of England”. Volumes VII to X – “Essays and Biographies”. Volumes XI and XII – “Speeches, Poems, & Miscellaneous Writings.” Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC, FRS, FRSE (1800 1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He is considered primarily responsible for the introduction of a Western-style education system in India. Macaulay wrote extensively as an essayist, on contemporary and historical sociopolitical subjects, and as a reviewer. His “History of England” was a seminal and paradigmatic example of Whig history, and its literary style has remained an object of praise since its publication, including the widespread condemnation of its historical contentions which became popular in the 20th century. All books are tight and sound with no major faults. Gilt titling and floral design on spines are still bright. Top edges gilt. Mild rubbing to some edges but just one tip just barely starting. Spine ends are bumped a little on some volumes with just one volume showing signs of early fraying. A few lower tips are slightly bumped. Four of the volumes have a small darkish smudge on either the front or back cover (each cover of Vol. 1). A very presentable set that looks great on the shelf, especially with the floral gilt design on the spines. Volume 12 is the only volume where the book has opened a little too far in a couple of places (gutter cracks). 6.5 x 10. 500-680 pp. per volume
