Item Details
Description
The exceptionally wide and full bodied copper model in fine detail and proportion standing on four hollow legs is attributed to Harris and Sons of Boston. The untouched dry surface exhibits an outstanding time-generated layer of variegated green verdigris to the copper body, and a powdery, granular oxidation to the iron head. The hindquarters and parts of the udder retain a good sample of the original gilt surface. Other parts of the figure also show gilding where the verdigris has been heavily rubbed. The iron head and face are cast in nice detail, particularly the pronounced and exuberantly curled horns. Weathervanes like this, with a heavier, more solid head, would balance properly and be more likely to keep the figure facing into the wind.

A. J. Harris and Company operated in Boston from 1868 to 1882.

Measures 25.5 x 38 x 7.5 inches.

Provenance: Private Collection Denver, Colorado.

Condition
Very good condition, no dents, tears (excepting the tube below the horizontal support), repairs or bullet holes. The zinc ears display build-up of solder at their application points which is presumed to be original.
