Description
A BLUE AND WHITE OCTAGONAL 'CANTON' TUREEN STAND Late 18th Century Rectangular with canted corners, the central panel painted in vivid cobalt tones with a selection of iconic buildings in Guangzhou set against a mountainous landscape, all enclosed by diaper bands at the cavetto and rim, the latter band punctuated with ruyi heads and suspending floral boughs and butterflies, the base unglazed. 9 3/4in (24.7cm) long Footnotes: The scene depicts a view of Guangzhou (Canton) alongside the White Cloud Mountains. Some creative liberties were taken in the placement of the buildings, however the primary landmarks remain, such as the Flower Pagoda, the Watchtower, and the Plain Tower. For a covered tureen and stand of this type in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem (inv. no. E80322.abc), see William R.
