Description
A Hellenistic Calene Blackware Guttus w/ Head of Medusa, c.4th Century BC - Southern Italian, Campania. A terracotta oil flask or Guttus with a round gadrooned body, a single loop handle, a high spout with a funnel mouth and an everted rim adorned with concentric rings, and a raised, tiered spool foot, and the head of Medusa in relief. 3 1/4" h x 4 3/4" w. Condition: Signs of wear and use commensurate with significant age. Provenance: Private Boca Raton, FL Collection, acquired in Paris, France between 1965 and 1967 and brought to the United States in 1969. Authenticated in 1968 by Gerard Levy, 17 Rue de Beune, Paris.
