Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast United States or Canada, Haida culture, ca. 1956 CE. A carved cedar wood panel of a Watchman, a supernatural guardian spirit that would alert the chief or village of impending danger - often 3 or more were grouped together to watch from all directions. Both real people and the symbolic figures crouching on the top of totem poles, were stationed around the village to warn of attacks. They were often carved wearing conical hats that symbolized the rank or status of the chief they protected. The verso is signed by an unknown artist: "J. Hunt / 56" and has a description label. Size: 11.5" L x 3.75" W (29.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000; ex-Leon LaFortune estate, Vancouver, BC, Canada
