Item Details
Description
Carroll, Mary Ann (1940-2019) Florida Highwaymen Painting. Oil on Upson - signed lower right. Learning to paint with Harold Newton. Crafted in rich red palette knife tree and foliage on orange peel Upson pebble side. Painted in 1967, provenance lineage dates sold to a downtown Fort Pierce business from Mrs. Carroll who was 27 years old at the time for $15. This painting possesses the signature cloud work of her mentor Harold Newton as often depicted in Harold's Rio Mar scenes. An exemplary example of the Highwaymen sharing the talent with their colleagues as well as the sales methods. Intriguing pricing documentation begs reflection to the Rule of 76 which would mean that this aspiring young artist selling a $15 painting in 1967 is the equivalent of over $1000 or a months rent by today's standards. Verso professionally conserved with tan backing. Board measures 24x36 framed to overall size of 28x41. African American Highwaymen Folk Art, evolved from the Backus Indian River School Art Colony. Condition: Very Fine
