WILLIAM EUSTIS (1753-1825). Eustis was an American physician, soldier, and statesman; he served as Madison’s first Secretary of War. LS. 2pp. Both sides of a single sheet. 8” x 10”. Washington, Oct. 11, 1811. To Jonathan Rhea; “…I enclose a check for 100 dollars to be disposed of in whole or in part at your discretion. When it is considered that Mr. Gulick furnished me in the first instance with a horse….the lameness returned upon him on his first journey that this was the original cause of all the disappointments & expence to which I was subjected….with another pair of horses which nevered earned me ten miles from the city, I cannot conceive that in equity or justice he has a claim on me for money….” Eustice continues on concerning his problems with horses purchased. Fine.
