Description
Cheever, Henry Theodore; Life in the Sandwich Islands : or, The Heart of the Pacific, as it was and is; London: Richard Bentley 1851. 1st English Edition. Xix, 1-312, 331-333 [315] pages. Hardcover.
Hawaii - Description and Travel - 19th Century Hawaiian History Kingdom of Hawaii Missions and Missionaries Hawaiian Culture Hawaiian Literature Surfing Whaling Pacific Ocean - Commerce Sandwich Islands - Hawaii Forbes 1804
Good. Both hinges starting but solid, cocked, chipping to spine head and tail, spine sun, some pencil writing in top margin of a few text pages, edgewear, edge tone, owner's signature on front paste-down, 1904 owner's signature on front free endpaper and half-title page, otherwise light wear. Still solid hardcover. Binder's label on rear pastedown: "Bound by Remnant & Edmonds London". Appendix pagination skips from page 312 to 331-333, this is apparently not missing content as the same is seen in online copy of this edition; I suppose the typesetter transposed page 313 to 331 and continued that pagination error for the remaining two pages.
Significant mid-nineteenth-century account of extensive visit to the Kingdom of Hawaii by American minister, with much inter-island travel, a description of surfing, Hawaiian language, and impact of missionaries and whaling ships on Hawaiian society. David W Forbes; Hawaiian National Bibliography, Volume 3, 1851-1880; 1804. While Cheever was an advocate of US annexation of Hawaii, his account is generally sensitive to the changes in traditional Hawaiian society caused by Western influences and viewpoints.
