"The following pages contain the introductory chapter of the history now being prepared by Judge Fremont Wood who tried the Moyer-Haywood-Pettibone labor trials and subsequently passed sentence upon Harry Orchard, the principal in the assassination of former Governer Steunenberg. This does not purport to give any portion of the details of the trial appearing in the record, but gives only the viewpoint of Judge Wood, after a retrospect of nearly twenty-five years, involving details which have never been made public." - Foreword. Major 1907 trial in Idaho, first of leaders of the striking Western Federation of Miners, Charles Moyer, William "Big Bill" Haywood, and George Pettibone, of conspiring to assassinate former Governor Frank Steunenberg. The three were found not guilty, although Judge Wood shares his belief that they were indeed responsible. Harry Orchard was the dynamiter who assassinated the former Governor in 1905, and was found guilty; he had testified in the earlier trial that the union leaders had organized the bombing. An interesting insight into this significant episode in mine worker unionization in the Rocky Mountains.
