Description
1 Groat - Henry VIII 3rd coinage, 24 mm; Tower mint. Obverse, crowned bust of King Henry VIII 1/4 right, legend around, reverse, quartered shield of arms over long cross fourchée, legend around. Toward the end of Henry VIII's reign, the silver was progressively debased from 1544 to 1546. The blanched silver surface of the coins wore away to reveal the copper alloy beneath, which earned Henry the nickname "Old Coppernose". Purchased from Granta Coins, Cambridge.
