Alfred Edward Emslie, ARWS (British, 1848-1918) Figures by a water well, Japan signed 'A.E.EMSLIE.' (lower left) watercolour heightened with white 34.9 x 22.8cm (13 3/4 x 9in). Footnotes: Emslie was a part of a family of artists, his father being the engraver John Emslie, his brother, the figure painter John Phillipps Emslie and his wife, the painter Rosalie M. Emslie. John and Rosalie then became parents to a daughter, Rosalie M. Emslie who went on to become a portrait and landscape painter. During his artistic career, Emslie was fascinated by Asia and spent three months exploring Japan where he most likely drew inspiration for this work.
