Description
An ancient Roman carved sarcophagus. Sarcophagi, which were stone coffins used to hold the remains of the deceased in ancient Rome, often featured intricate carvings and designs that reflected the beliefs and traditions of the time. The bull heads in the corners and masks with wreaths on the sides have various symbolic meanings. Bulls were sometimes associated with strength and sacrifice, and masks with wreaths could symbolize the afterlife. Sarcophagi like this one not only served as burial containers but also conveyed cultural and religious beliefs of the Roman period. Dates back to the 1st century AD.
