TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'The geography of the great solar eclipse of July, 14, 1748 exhibiting an accurate map of all parts of the earth in which it will be visible, with the North Pole according to the latest discoveries, by G. Smith Esqr.'
Showing the path of the eclipse and the penumbra or shadow across those parts of North America, Hispaniola, northern Africa, Europe and Asia in which this eclipse was visible. Diagrams indicate the maximum extent of the eclipse in certain cities around the world, indicating that Edinburgh was the best placed European city for observation - the eclipse being "nearly central".
